Climbing the Plum Tree

OUR PHILOSOPHY AND MISSION:

The Children’s Earth School believes in cultivating an appreciation of life, connecting children to the earth, and awakening their innate wisdom. The school is located in West Asheville surrounded by colorful gardens, hiking trails, and a flowing creek. This setting provides the perfect backdrop to support our vision. Location can be found here!

THE CHILD’S PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT AND NATURE:

The awakening of the child’s innate wisdom goes hand in hand with the cultivation of his/her physical coordination; therefore, we believe a child’s physical development and imagination are the building blocks to later academic and abstract learning. In order to facilitate the children’s physical development, the school has numerous elements including rope swings, balancing slack-lines, sand play, tree-climbing, creek fun, and a wooden climbing structure. In a safe and loving environment, the children are well cared for and free to explore in this Waldorf-Nature-Based Program. To learn more about the nature world, visit this site:

CREATIVE PLAY AND ACADEMICS THROUGH THE ARTS:

One of the parents dubbed the school “a creative garden, overflowing with love”.  We believe in educating the child’s confidence, sense of self, and instilling trust in their own innate wisdom and abilities. The school offers plenty of time for imaginative play. Such imagination-based, free play is becoming less and less available to children in our current public school systems and technological world at large.  It is our belief that exposure to media, gaming, and screen-time robs children of memories of their childhood, and furthermore, lays the foundation to addiction and consumerism. Creative play is the “work” of childhood; therefore, a well developed imagination equips the child with higher problem-solving and reasoning abilities as he or she matures into adulthood. Children cannot assimilate or digest their world unless he has time to play freely, governed by his own imagination. By weaving such artistic activities as beeswax sculpting, watercolor painting, foreign languages (Spanish and German), drawing, knitting, flute playing, singing, and movement games with the academics, we believe that each child’s individual approach to learning is validated.

CELEBRATING THE CHANGE OF SEASONS THROUGH  FESTIVALS:

We integrate the natural world into everything from outdoor play, to gardening, to bread making, to toy making, to nature stories, and healthy toys. This connection to nature sparks creativity. An often overlooked part of Waldorf’s connection to natural play is through their celebration of seasonal festivals. The celebration of festivals is an integral part of Waldorf curriculum. Each festival appears around the time of both the equinoxes and the solstices and is a joyous expression of life. These festivals have the quality of lifting us out of the ordinary and taking us into the mysteries. The celebration of festivals interweaves the cycles of nature and honors life on the earth.
